Our firm was opened in 2009 by Emma Patterson, recognised as one of the UK’s leading Road Traffic Lawyers. Emma was often referenced in the press in motoring offence related articles such as this one in the Daily Mail and was often asked to take part in media interviews.
Emma began her career in the South West as a legal advisor to magistrates before moving on to London. In her role as legal advisor she attended road traffic courts daily, advising magistrates on every aspect of traffic and motoring law.
She presented training for Magistrates at the Judicial Studies Board and also advised Magistrates with regard to statutory changes.
When Emma moved to private practice she built one of the largest general criminal departments in the South West of England. She dealt with several high profile cases and in doing so earned a reputation as an exceptional lawyer and excellent court room advocate.
Emma was chosen to represent clients who were facing multi-million pound money laundering charges, murder allegations (which included one of the largest in the SW) as well as representing a client during interviewing in connection with the terrorist attack on the twin towers on September 11th.
In 2009 Emma decided to concentrate solely on her specialism and her favourite part of law – road traffic. It was Emma’s belief that the best way to serve her clients was to specialize in motoring law rather than dabbling in many different areas. Through her years Emma provided road traffic law advice nationwide and built a team of barristers and lawyers.
She advised the Association of British Drivers as well as writing for First Car magazine offering legal advice for new drivers recently passing their driving test. Emma also contributed regularly on the Pistonheads website on the subject of traffic law, as well as contributing articles to Auto Express.
Since then our Dominic Smith has taken over as the leading Road Traffic Expert at Patterson Law. Dominic jointed the firm in 2009 and has worked entirely in Road Traffic Law, becoming one of the UK’s leading experts.
Dominic is the first choice of many of the UK’s largest firms and regularly advises companies with fleets of thousands of vehicles. Notably Dominic has represented the Nation’s largest providers of roadside recovery and was the leading lawyer in the nationally recognised case of DPP v Barreto, which led to a change in the UK legislation for driving whilst using a mobile telephone.
Dominic provides legal advice to many media companies and TV stations about motoring matters, and writes for Motoring Magazines including Private Hire and Taxi Monthly. He has represented some of the UK’s most high profile defendants including film stars, politicians, singers, international footballers and royalty,
Dominic is regularly asked to provide legal advice and commentary to national newspapers.

“At first I was rather sceptical about using a firm that I had never heard of and that were based many miles from me. I certainly needn’t of worried. You, personally, have a very calming nature and I found it very easy to talk to you and, in return, you made everything as clear as possible to me.” “I was concerned that I would not meet my barrister until shortly before my court appearance, but once again I need not have worried as Vanessa was very good at allaying my anxieties and was fantastic in court."
You were absolutely perfect from start to finish. Not sure you can improve, just keep up the great service. Thanks again.
Thank you very much , I will continue to use you and also will tell my friends etc that you guys are really good professional
I heard today that no charges will be brought against me. I wanted to thank you for your initial advice which encouraged me to defend myself and your advice how to proceed. Thanks for keeping me posted at all times with progress. I can't thank you enough, this decision is a huge decision off my shoulders.
Jason Rosser was our progression officer and from start to finish we were kept informed by emails and phone calls. He was kind and very helpful. With his help our daughters case was dropped by the CPS and we cannot thank him enough. Even when Jason was on annual leave Ian took over and was in contact with us for the week, there was always someone there you could speak to. We highly recommend this company if you are in need of help with a driving offence. Thank you everyone who was involved with this case, we really appreciate all what you have done for our daughter and ourselves.
I am really sorry for bombarding you with emails and phone calls when you were on top of things but you have to know that from our end things are different. I have never been taken to court and was nervous and panicky. The process was a long and tedious which did not help me at all, but thank you so much for your dedication to my case and most of all, thank you for putting up with me during that difficult moment. This means a lot to me and my family. Thank you very much Rachel. Emma - Thank you for putting me at ease during my first call. Your initial free advice was priceless and things turned out as you advised. i was also glad that I have decided about representing myself or being represented by others. My last thanks goes to young Kirsty Day who was really, really brilliant at court. She initially tried to have the case thrown out but managed to nail a Not Guilty verdict which was a music to my ears. I had stressful and sleepless nights over the last 7th months.
Your input from the off was fantastic, morale boosting and demonstrated a lateral thinking approach for defence that neither of the 'home' based firms I use ever mentioned. I cannot thank you all enough for what was a great result for me, my family and colleagues.
