Failure to report an accident
Hi,I am a learner driver and I am very worried, that I have been really stupid, I was doing a multi turn in the road and I hit the bumper on a transit van. I got out and looked at the bumper and it looked OK. I drove off.
I have now received a letter off Kent police asking if I am the owner of a certain vehicle, which I am. I am petrified what is going to happen. I look forward to your help. Thank you for your time.
If you didn’t realise that there was any damage then you will have a potential defence.
If the police don’t believe you, you are at risk of a summons to court for driving without due care and attention, failing to stop and failing to report an accident. These offences carry 5-10 penalty points or a ban.
You need to name yourself as the driver at the time of the alleged offence – otherwise you risk 6 penalty points and a hefty fine for failing to nominate the driver at the time of the alleged offence.
